Apple Inc.’s iTunes online store in a short span of time has left behind websites like amazon.com and Target Corp. Apple now rules the music world as the third-largest music retailer in the United States. iTunes with 9.8% market share lags behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Best Buy Co.
The survey was done by NPD but it didn’t include mobile music sales as a factor. Apple’s rise as a music retailer surely indicates that digital music is in more demand than compact discs. On a contrary digital music just formed less then a quarter of total sale in music units. On a whole, some 212 million albums were sold so far, some 16 % less than the sales previous year. But the digital tracks sale has increased by 49%. If every format of music is combined the sales have increased by 14% then last year.
